Part two:

JUNIPHER GREENE was a Norwegian progressive rock band who were formed in Oslo in 1967. The initial line-up included Bent Aserud on guitars, keyboards, flute and vocals, Geir Bohren on lead vocals, drums and sax, Helge Groslie on keyboards, Freddie Dahl on guitar and vocals and Oyvind Vilbo on bass. They released their ambitious debut album in 1971 called “Friendship”. It stands as one of Norway’s earliest progressive album and the country’s first double LP.They were one of Norway’s best bands together with RUPHUS and HOST, although they only released one album in 1973 “Communication” (also very good) before splitting in the mid 70s. Two compilation albums, “Best Of” (1975) and “Rewind” (1981), which also featured a number of unreleased tracks recorded between 1969 and 1980, were issued. Helge Groslie left the band to join TITANIC in 1972, Aserud and Bohren kept the JUNIPHER GREENE name for various incarnations during the 80s, although these were very different to the original group. They’ve since built a reputation as the creators of Norwegian movie soundtracks.

  Electric Prunes «Mass in F Minor»

Using the Electric Prunes to perform a pseudo-religious concept album constructed as a psychedelic mass (and sung in Latin) must have, to use the old cliche, seemed like a good idea at the time. One strike against the project from the outset was that it was not the brainchild of the group so much as of outside business forces, who wanted them to perform the material, which was wholly composed, arranged, and conducted by David Axelrod. It’s not all that bad, both for its novelty value and for the pleasing imagination of much of Axelrod’s arrangements. These match heavy organ with the usual heavy Electric Prunes guitar reverb, as well as choral harmonies, semi-acid freakout guitar soloing (which sounds like the Jefferson Airplane in spots), and dabs of horns and orchestral instruments. It’s not all that great, either, sounding forced and dated in some respects. Undoubtedly the highwater mark is “Kyrie Eleison,” which was featured in the Easy Rider soundtrack (how did Peter Fonda find the tune?), and boasts some enchanting guitar tremolo, harmonies, and stop-start tempos. Incidentally, it’s since been discovered that much of the music was played not by the Prunes, but by session musicians and the Canadian band the Collectors. — Richie Unterberger, All-Music Guide

Electric Prunes «Release of an Oath»

“Through the centuries and out of the travail of the past, man has many times, in his search for a better life, been forced by powers beyond his control to foreswear the principles of his fathers and to accept the yoke of a conqueror who might vanquish his body, but not his soul. But no man of principle can live with himself having foresworn the ideals that he lives by. In yearning to free his spirit of the conqueror’s yoke, he has conjured up a psychological release that enables him to break the chains that bind him to any oath made under duress and in violation of his principles. Such a lament is the Kol Nidre - a prayer of antiquity which cleanses the spirit and enables man to start anew, with his eyes again on the stars.

This, then, is the music of the Kol Nidre, which is as modern and meaningful today as when it was first written. David Axelrod has brought the music into a contemporary stance by blending the melodies of the centuries with today’s contemporary sounds. David Hassinger has taken the efforts of David Axelrod and, with his provocative talents, has in turn blended them into this artful presentation by The Electric Prunes.”
